Introduction
What’s the problem?
There all 2.7 millions cats and dogs who die each year because shelters are too full or because of cruelty. As well as 3.9 million dogs and 3.4 million cats who enter a shelter a year. The main reason animals are in shelters: owners give them up or animal control finds them on the street.(SIAS,2015) We want to help these dogs even though we are 14 and have no car, no income we can still help by volunteering at shelters and donating food or materials to pet stores and shelters as well.
Research
Who has helped try to solve this?
The Humane Society is the largest dog protection program in the United States. We and our affiliates provide hands on care service for to more than 100,000 dogs a year and we professionalize the field through education and training for local organizations.(Humane Society,2015) My group and I would love to volunteer for their organization but they're difficult to get to.
Method
How will we help?
The first thing we want to do is volunteer at shelters and we already have 2 leads on it for volunteering at veterinary hospitals. To add on we also would like to donate food and materials to shelters or pet stores. We wanted to get the food by asking people to donate can dog food or toys. We had an idea of reaching out to ASB to see if they can announce on their news broadcast to donate dog food for sheltered puppies.
Why did we choose these options?
We chose these because since there's not much we can do since everything nowadays required under 18 we decided these are most helpful for what we can do. We think that volunteering will be most feasible and actually seeing these dogs and cats in shelters it will want us want to do more to help. When it comes to a situation like this I think they can always use help. The more people the more care we will be able to give to these dogs and cats. The hardest I think will be getting food donated but I think that will be the most helpful because shelters can always use extra help and a dog should never go to sleep without a meal. I think we will definitely do the volunteering because there lots of programs that take volunteers. We would love to donate food but I think that will be a little trickier. I feel we will have some food to donate but not from the whole school maybe just our group but at least it's something.
Introduction
After reading A Christmas Carol and reading the articles on helping others, I learned that the most common idea of “helping” is not always the best option. When Ben Losman, a freelance writer, states in his article, Seduced By Good Intentions, “We throw around the phrase ‘changing the world’ as if it's as simple as flipping a switch. But social change is a slow grinding process. I must happen on the terms of the people who are directly affected- not those who’ll pick up and leave after a year or two” (Losman, 2015).
I want to help homeless or mistreated animals, although I may not be able to stop animal abuse or be able to help every single homeless animal I want to do my part because this is a topic close to my heart. I think helping them is important because we are obviously bigger than them as well as the reason they are often mistreated. They deserve to live a happy healthy life in an environment that loves and cares for them. I have stray cats around my neighborhood and one of my neighbors has put out a cat play structure with several covered sleeping areas, as well as fresh water, daily food, and affection. Although the cats are not “hers” she still takes care of them as if they were.
