Zine Final products
In our group zine, we chose to highlight the surprising regularity that bullying and harassment occurs. Our different subjects displayed different aspects of harassment in modern society. Our advocacy stemmed from our own knowledge on the subjects we chose to write about. We used the knowledge we accumulated during the process of writing our research paper and creating our zine to spread information about preventing the different types of harassment and bullying. I choose my social topic because it is something that I have experienced firsthand and would not wish on anyone else. I also recognized that street harassment is something that is unfortunately very common among women.
Literature research helped me gain information about my social topic because prior to writing my research paper and using journals to cite sources, I relied on my experience with catcalling to form my argument. With the addition of the studies and other firsthand accounts of street harassment, I was able to form a stronger argument about why street harassment is a violation of the basic social needs. One statistic that helped shape my learning was one from a professor at Cornell University. Professor Beth Livingston proved that out of 4,900 women, 67% experienced street harassment before the age of 14.
After the Chula Vista Zine Fest, I am the most proud of how organized everything was and how we were able to exhibit alongside of professional zine artists and not be completely under par to their work. I will definitely take away the knowledge that it takes a village to get a wonderful community event to work as well as this did.

Zine making process
The process of creating our final zine was a lot more intense than I thought it would be. At the beginning, my group’s ideas flowed really well and we were able to create a well organized zine that flowed with all of our social topics. Our issues lied with the layout and formatting of the zine, and the cover. When we started creating the zine, we knew that we wanted it to be bold and to make a statement to the reader. We all created our zine sections individually but when it came to the cover, we all had different opinions. Akiko and Luisa from the Museum of Contemporary Art really liked the graphic lines around Aija’s cover and my use of bold colors in the stop sign, so we tried combining them and created a really cool spider web-esque cover. I was able to develop my skills in Adobe Illustrator since I worked on formatting the zine. Previous to this project I had no idea how to use this program but since there were so many formatting errors, I had to adapt very quickly. At the end of this project I am happy to say that I am a master in Adobe Illustrator.
